As the death toll in Brussels rose to at least 31 people, an outpouring of support spread on Twitter, with #bruxelles the top trending hastag along with #PrayForBelgium, #PrayForBrussels and #JeSuisBruxelles.
Belgians also began using the hashtag #ikwilhelpen — I want to help — to offer help to the people stranded by the shutdown of the airport and the métro, where the attacks took place. It was a gesture that mirrored the help in Paris after the attacks there in November.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted his condemnation of the attacks.
The Canadian Embassy in Belgium shared phone numbers and guidance for Canadians there.
Ottawa announced it has raised the Belgian flag at city hall:
And there were pleas for people to not spread news of any police movements.
