This will be the topic of discussion on Thursday morning — early! — in an event put on by the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
Why now? We all know know the best cities are the most creative. But thriving creative scenes need nurturing, and this is what the city set out to do 60 years ago, when it created the organization, which has contributed to the city’s rich tapestry.
To mark 60 years, take part in a discussion that will touch on what exactly drove the City of Montreal to support its creative artists and arts companies by creating the Conseil in the first place.
Early risers will love the timing of the event: 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Thursday at Hôtel Bonaventure, 900 de la Gauchetière St. W. Rise and shine to discuss:
— the contribution the Conseil has made to Montreal’s social, political, and technological evolution, and the artistic expression that has become a part of the city’s DNA, organizers say.
— the ways in which the business community’s commitment to the arts has evolved.
— art as a powerful agent of development.
— Montreal’s profusion of artistic expression, through which the city asserts its identity and vitality.
— the challenges for the coming years.
The speakers will be: Jan-Fryderyk Pleszczynski, chair of the Conseil des arts de Montréal and president of Digital Dimension will be in discussion with Nathalie Maillé, executive director of the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
The cost is $56 for members of the Conseil and $81 for non-members. Book tickets here.
The Conseil helps artists across the creative spectrum, including, for example, singer Karen Young, whose latest work is an arrangement she has done for eight voices, harp and upright bass for traditional songs from the British Isles.
Here’s a peek of the work in rehearsal in the lead-up to performances in May and June.
And here is Young in her other milieu: jazz.
