Starting Wednesday evening, don’t be shocked to see some pretty big faces looming over you as you stroll around Old Montreal. They are the faces of history, and they will come alive at dusk with the start of the season for Cité Mémoire, a collection of enchanting projections you’ll find at 19 locations.

They will tell their stories through an app you can use on your phone or tablet. It shows you where to find the tableaux, and once you’ve found one, you can hook up to dedicated wi-fi, press play and voilà: Words and music will begin, and you’ll get a mini history lesson that is poetic, dreamy and sometimes playful.

You’ll meet the characters who were there for the city’s evolution. Each night when the sun goes down, you’ll see them on trees, walls, the ground. Do the circuit at your own pace.

Cité Mémoire is paired with the app for Montréal en Histoires, which also offers tidbits of history at a bunch of points around Old Montreal at any time of day (no projections; just info about what you’re standing in front of). Down load the app for Cité Mémoire-Montréal en Histoires in the App Store or on Google Play.

More information is here. It’s all free.

Feed Your Head is a new phone app original, offering suggestions every weekday for interesting stuff to make you think. Check out another afternoon feature In or Out?, where we offer suggestions for both staying in or going out. Thoughts? We’re right here: smartphone@montrealgazette.com
